The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker, is great artistic dance work, which features choreography from Petipa and music from composer Tchaikovsky. It is recognized worldwide as reference between dancers. This classic ballet tells the story of a soldier who becomes human, and takes the protagonist on a journey to a magical world. Throughout the narrative, the protagonist goes through several times and conflicts, in a long show, divided into two acts. Looking to innovate, BR MALLS brought in 2014 the show The Nutcracker for Shopping Catuaí Londrina.
As we move forward in the production, we realized the need to take special care with the perspective and depth. We recreated almost all the objects in 3D. That allowed movements previously impossible.

Chroma Garden made a projection mapping for BRMALLS.
The show was The Nutcracker, from Petipa and Tchaikovsky.

My role was concept, storyboard and animation.

In the first few meetings we discussed the need to reduce the duration of the show, so that there we should insert the show to the Shopping Center schedule. Our team had the help of experienced ballerina Luana Zeglin, who participated in the music-making and reduced the presentation for 5 songs. The reduction did not affect the plot because it was kept at logical sequence of scenes.

Luana Zeglin and Camila were Zeglin, from Sista Produções, were artistic coordinators of the show. They adapted the choreography from Petita for the number of dancers available, and for to the stage size.

Before you start creating scenarios, our team sought references stages around the world. We studied the story of The Nutcracker, and visually assemble the look we wanted to achieve.

As we defined the scenario and had the illustration ready, we started the animation process. This included all the movements of coming and going of the elements on the scene, in addition to extra effects like snow, lights, movements of trees, candles, and so on.

As we move forward in the production, we realized the need to take special care with the perspective and depth. We recreated almost all the objects in 3D. That allowed movements previously impossible.

About 3 days before the premiere, one of our members went to the Shopping Center to get a close look to assembly of the setting and positioning of projectors. The projection mapping took place after the mall closed at dawn.

The day before the premiere, the shopping administration could already enjoy the presentation with projection mapping. With everything ready, the show takes place during one week in Shopping Catuaí. Press became rapidly alerted, as the show attracted numerous spectators to the Shopping Center.
